Breadfruit May Be the Next Big Flour but is it Good?

Just last week, we had a blog about the benefits and drawbacks of the keto diet. Overall, we’re not huge fans. We don’t like crash diets that are very restrictive. They are hard to stick to and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. We think the best diet isn’t one from the internet — it’s the one you and your doctor discuss.

However, there are aspects of the keto diet we do appreciate. We like that it has led to so many great recipes that can be helpful to someone who is looking to cut out some carbs to aid their blood sugar. We especially like that the rise of the diet has made low-carb ingredients widely available. It used to be that if you wanted low-carb alternative ingredients to things like flour, you had to head to specialty stores. That’s fine in the city. But, it’s harder in the suburban and rural parts of the country. And, the price really added up quickly. Now, it’s becoming normal, on the shelf and frequently on sale!

Scientists are looking for the next low-carb option all the time, expanding the market. The next flour hitting the shelves might be breadfruit. While breadfruit has been a staple in many parts of the world for years, it’s only recently come to North America. But, researchers think flour made from the fruit could be a great low-carb and gluten-free option. It’s easy to digest while also having a low GI. It’s high in fiber and protein and is rich in nutrients. Those qualities make it more appealing than many other low-carb flours currently on the market.

The researchers didn’t say how expensive the flour would be. However, breadfruit is a highly abundant and sustainable crop that makes it more likely to be affordable to grow and be reasonably priced at the store. This could potentially change low-carb flour from being “not unhealthy” to being an actual health food. Instead of making a baked item an okay treat, there is a possibility that its protein content and nutrient level will make breadfruit and its flour a staple of our diet!

We have to wait and see what further research says. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that more studies confirm these finds! Cookies will never be healthy. But, with this flour and other beneficial ingredients, veggie-filled sandwiches might be something we find ourselves eating frequently!
