Limiting Carbs Can Increase Lifespan

We all want longer, healthier lives. Living to 100 isn’t appealing if you’re always unwell. New research shows that cutting carbs isn’t just good for weight loss and stable blood sugar; it can aid healthy aging and longevity. Lowering your intake of carbs while maintaining proteins, fats and nutrients can help you keep muscle mass, reduce inflammation and increase lifespan. Scientists say that decreasing carbs can retard metabolic changes linked to aging – even without limiting calories.

The evidence showed that limiting carbs in the study reduced inflammatory markers, aided insulin sensitivity, lowered serum aging factors, helped weight control and more. This research supports other studies and was published in the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine (AAAM). They saw that the diet made the most difference for people who started limiting carbs when they were middle-aged. The study was conducted by Dr. Saad Sami Al Sogair, a dermatologist based in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. It may seem odd for a board-certified dermatologist to be regarded as an anti-aging expert. However, he has published many articles that tell the science behind lowering the intake of carbohydrates and is a member of several international anti-aging and aesthetic societies of academics.

The overall finding is that, in general and based on the outcomes from various studies, a low carbohydrate diet – and not just a decreased caloric intake – improves metabolic changes associated with aging and increases the lifespan,” said Dr. Al Sogair.

None of this means that you have to start following a keto or Atkins diet. Extreme diets are hard to stick to, frequently unproven and rarely researched enough to know if they are safe. We aren’t advocating a carb-free diet. Only a medical professional should give out strict dietary advice when they know your specific health needs and history. However, lowering the number of carbs you usually eat might be helpful. Limiting carbs by replacing snacks with fruit or unsweetened yogurt can be a step in the right direction. You can make simple swaps in meals — like using veggies in place of pasta. If you would like some recipes to help you along the way, Glucocil shares recipe blogs every Tuesday.
